Character Information
Character Name: Nicholas St North
Fandom: Rise of the Guardians

Character History:
Nicholas St. North lost his parents at an early age. He had no memory of his father or mother or even his birthday. He grew up wild and alone, with no kind of real childhood. Eventually he was taken in by a tribe of cossacks and grew to be even wilder. He became a thief and a bandit, who cared for nothing else besides the taste of danger and the hunt for treasure.

But that all changed when he followed a dream of treasure to the village of Santoff Claussen. There, for the first time in his life Nicholas St. North performed an unselfish deed when he saved the children of the village from a bear. And And in the long weeks of his recovery he made his first friend in Katherine. He found joy in learning magic and creating marvelous magical and mechanical things. And he grew to love caring for children.

And he found that he could no longer go back to the life of a simple king of bandits. Over the next few years North would grow in his knowledge of magic as he met the others who would become guardians and grew into his role as the guardian of wonder.

By the time Rise of the Guardians begins North had been Santa Claus to the children of the world for a very long time. His workshop is massive and filled with elves and yetis all working towards the one goal of giving every child a gift at Christmas. (With questionable help from the elves, of course.) When Pitch makes an appearance North instantly reacts by calling together the other guardians. When Jack is revealed as the next guardian North reacts with enthusiasm (and quite a bit of childish delight both at having a new guardian to plan a celebration for and the chance to use the yeti and sack method to collect the new guardian).

North quickly takes on a mentoring role to Jack. Throughout the film, North repeatedly takes Jack aside and gives him advice at important moments. It is North that introduces Jack to what guardians are and the importance of their center.

Character Personality:
North is larger than life. If you took Sean Connery's Bond and Captain Kirk, rolled them up together and turned them into a massive good humored Russian you would get something close to what North is. When North enters a room he fills it up with his presence and personality. He looms. Everything he does, he does with tremendous enthusiasm and gusto. He doesn't just walk, he strides. He doesn't point, he gestures with swords. He doesn't enter rooms, he bursts into them.

North is a man of action and self-confidence. He makes swift decisions on what needs to be done and charges ahead. And he never second guesses himself. He doesn't make decisions on logic and facts so much as trusting his feelings and his gut instincts. His 'belly', as he puts it. North trusts his intuition. He is often impulsive, following whatever plan comes into his head. This can sometimes make him come across as a kind of jolly steamroller, as it is very difficult to put a stop to one of his ideas once he starts. The only thing most people can do is try to hang on and enjoy the ride.

He possesses a great deal of hard won wisdom. North is someone who knows exactly who he is and what his purpose is in the world, and that gives him confidence in everything he does. More importantly he has grown greatly as a person since his bandit days, and that has given him a great depth of wisdom about the guardians and their role in the world.

North has a very open mind, and an inventor's love of trying new things and new ideas. He's a tinkerer. He is always trying to improve on what he does, and is willing to take crazy leaps if he has a good feeling about them. And he takes a childlike glee in doing so.

Speaking of childishness, North takes great delight in indulging in it. Usually this comes at the expense of Bunnymund. North thoroughly enjoys arguing with him over the importance of Christmas and Easter, and pulling him along on adventures.

He sees possibilities in everything. All the wonder in the world, as he put it. He sees all the wonderful things that could be and puts all of his effort into making them reality. And he wants to share these wonders with everyone. And especially the children. He loves the children of the world, naughty and nice, and wants nothing more than to protect them and give them joy.

But no matter how far away he gets from his roots as a bandit, North never forgets them. He is proud of his Russian heritage, and his feats of treasure hunting and adventure as a young man. And he is always ready to grab his swords and head out on one more adventure.

[If anyone should happen to be out by the gates tonight, it would be hard to miss the gigantic white-bearded man in red who had just popped through the gate in a cloud of soot. He climbs to his feet and dusts himself off while grumbling in a heavy Russian accent.]

I tell elves to clean chimney. And do they do it? No! Dingle is going back on cookie duty, I am thinking.

And what is this?  Is not North Pole!

[He turns and takes in his new surroundings.]

...Wrong chimney?

Bah, there is no time for this! It is only nine months left!

Third Person:
North absentmindedly grabbed a cookie and took a bite out of it as he turned over the tiny piece of delicate clockwork. Snickerdoodle, he noted. The yeti had been experimenting with recipes again.

He peered at the toy again, and finally spotted a gear with a piece of grit trapped in the tooth. Of course! Such a simple solution to the problem.

North reached for the tiniest of his screwdrivers and carefully worked the small piece of grit out. He cleaned the exposed gears with a piece of cloth, then carefully blew across the back of the toy to loosen any other fragments of dirt that might have worked their way in. Then with a quiet snap he closed the back of the toy and turned the key to wind it up.

North laughed with delight and clapped his hands as the tiny clockwork ballerina began to turn and dance across the table. A little girl somewhere would love it. He was sure of it! He scooped it up as the tiny dancer slowed and merrily perched it on the shelf alongside a teddy bear and a miniature train engine.

And already he was thinking of all of the other wind up toys he could make. Soldiers who could march on their own! Small puppies and kittens and horses for all the children who could keep no pets of their own! And there would be music! Tiny musicboxes with dancing figures and dolls and instruments! Robots and heroes!  Planes and parachutes and balloons to dance through the air! Anything that would bring that look of wonder to a child's face.

This Christmas was going to be epic! Every Christmas was special in its own way, of course.  But every year North was determined to outdo the year before.  It wouldn't do to disappoint the children, after all.
